[מגילת אסתר היא אחת מחמש מגילות התנ"ך הנקראות בחגים דתיים יהודיים. האירועים המתוארים במגילת אסתר הם המקור לחג הפורים. המגילה נקראת בחג הפורים לזכר הצלת יהודי פרס בתקופת המלך אחשוורוש. המן, הווזיר של המלך, תכנן להטיל פורים כדי לקבוע את יום השמדת יהודי פרס. אסתר המלכה ובן דודה מרדכי היהודי סיכלו זאת. לאחר שניצחו את אויביהם, חגגו יהודי פרס ב"ימי משתה ושמחה".
כתב יד על קלף., The Book of Esther is one of the five Bible Megillot (the Hebrew word for scrolls) that are read on stated Jewish religious holidays. The events depicted in the Esther scroll are the source of the holiday of Purim. It is read on the festival of Purim to commemorate the rescue of the Jews of Persia during the reign of King Ahasuerus. Haman, the king's vizier, plotted to cast lots (in Hebrew: purim) to determine the day of the local Jews annihilation. Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai the Jew thwarted it. Having triumphed over their enemies, the Jews of Persia engaged in "days of feasting and joy”.
