Summary
This video consists of two parts, a performance given on September 24, 1987 at Jazzberries and a presentation titled "Poetry and the Community," given at the National Deaf Poetry Conference on September 25, 1987. The evening performance consists of the following poems: Black Hole: Colors ASL, Nature Metaphor, MIND POP-UP THAT (or So That's What That Was All About), The Void, I Raped Chocolate Last Night, LIFE FAST (or The Fast Pace of Life), Sunrise, Frog, Alien, Veal Boycott/Boycott Veal, Peace, and Willie. In this presentation, Debbie Rennie traces how she became a poet including her experiences in theatre. She explains a number of techniques she uses in poetry such as: descriptive and outline use of fingerspelling, playing with limited handshapes, rhythm, frozen images, transformations, choreography, speed, facial expression as well as other elements. In addition, she describes important aspects of storytelling which she identifies as character development, story line, building of expectation, and audience involvement. During this presentation, she performs Swan, Missing Children, a number of Haiku, a story about her roommate, and an excerpt from Kipling's Just So Stories. She ends her presentation talking about the dangers of labeling and judging the works of others as well as the importance of community support.

A Tribe is Deaf
Date of Original
1987-09-24
Summary
Jim Cohn refers to a 1984 February 1 video when Allen Ginsberg visited and presented in a NTID classroom. The captions on this video were typed in teletypewriter (TTY) style. There are excerpts of the historic meeting of the poets Dr. Robert Panara, and Allen Ginsberg. The first excerpt shows Panara performing his most famous poem, “On His Deafness”. Cohn discusses the “Golden Age Poets” from the 1930-1950s Gallaudet era and Ginsberg’s affiliation with the Beat poets. The next excerpt is Ginsberg discussing Patrick Graybill’s concept of poetry as a picture and idea similar to the work of the 20th century Imagist poets, William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound with an emphasis on imagery in their works. These poets had a lot of influence on free verse. Ginsberg states that the best poems that translates into other languages are those that have pictures, which is also best for Deaf people, as there is less emphasis on sounds and rhymes. Cohn then discusses how a clear and strong image can be translated between languages and cultures and an excerpt of Ginsberg reciting his favorite lines from the “Howl” poem is shown. Graybill asks why he chose those two words “hydrogen jukebox” and Ginsberg explains its apocalyptic meaning—the noise of the jukebox is like the bomb. Ginsberg asks whether “hydrogen jukebox” could be shown in sign language and in a stunning moment, Graybill translates “hydrogen jukebox”. Ginsberg realized that Graybill had captured the word-image visually. Cohn ends the presentation by discussing the legitimacy of ASL poetry, and quotes Earl Sollenberger, “you have to know what your tribe is speaking.” He shares the story of a Deaf boy who said, “it’s not NTID, it’s ATID.” When Cohn asked him what he meant, the boy replied, “A tribe is Deaf!” Sign interpreted by Kip Webster. Analysis of Birds of a Different Feather
Date of Original
1991
Summary
The 1992 video text is published by DawnSignPress and is entitled Bird of a Different Feather; A Decent Living. It includes a student video text, workbook and a teacher’s guide. Ben Bahan discusses the original ASL Literature video text narratives he and Sam Supalla created and their analyses. Bird of a Different Feather by Ben Bahan explores the experiences of a different-looking bird within a family of eagles. For a Decent Living by Sam Supalla is a novella in which the protagonist is a Deaf boy on a journey to find his deaf identity. Ben and Sam first analyzed the structure of their stories such as breaking up the narrative into chapters. Ben invites audience participation in analyzing the story further by applying literary and cultural analyses. Literary elements are discussed such as the story genre (his ‘Bird of a Different Feather’ is like a fable and allegory), themes and motifs such as the ‘different beak’ of the fourth baby bird, the time period of the story, the cultures in the story, the point of view of the storyteller, the mood of the story, foreshadowing, character development, characters’ names, the number of characters in the story, sign referents, body movement, facial expressions, writing and signing styles. ASL Literature is a body of work worthy of equal consideration in the literary world. There is evidence that it has literary elements common to all literature. Ben announces the publication of their narratives through DawnSignPress and hopes that more ASL Literature works will be published along with scholarly critiques.

Character development in ASL narrative

Summary
This presentation explores the development of character in ASL narrative, focusing primarily on a story created by Julianna Fjeld and told through the persona of a bag lady. We examine the process by which Fjeld created the bag lady character, and we examine how the elements of language use and theatricality contribute to the creation of character in ASL literature. Through this case study approach, our goal is to begin building a theory which will be applicable to character development in other ASL narratives, poetry, and drama. Julianna Fjeld performs the story during this presentation.
