Commissioned in 1941 by the Rural Electrification Administration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to communicate the benefits of electricity to citizens in outlying areas of the country. This is an early example of American graphic design applied to public service, and is part of six-poster Series Three, which centered around public defense when the United States entered World War II. The poster depicts a workman sharpening a knife on a motorized grindstone (black and white photograph silhouette), against a blue and white-striped background with black. . The Lester Beall Collection was donated to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1984 by his children, Joanna Beall Westermann and Lester Beall Jr. It was transferred to the Special Collections at Wallace Library in February 1991. The collection provides exhaustive documentation of the life and work of Beall (1903-1969), a seminal figure in the history of American graphic design. The collection includes 47 posters.
