Summary:
The American Type Founders Company (ATF) was formed out of a business necessity. Led by John Marder of the Chicago Type Foundry and Arthur Brower of the Union Type Foundry, several other type founders created a combined company of twenty-three plants scattered across the United States, which was incorporated by November 1892. This undated catalog of script type specimens is not included in Annenberg, who is unclear about the time frame in which the imprint for the MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan branch of the ATF was used; probably between approximately 1895-1903 (the year in which George Frederick Jordan died). The majority of the specimens are credited to MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan, but others are credited to Boston Type Foundry, Central Type Foundry, Cincinnati Type Foundry, and the Dickinson Type Foundry.
