Summary:
|
First edition of this luxurious, allegorical alphabet by Godinho, with a full-page lithograph for each letter. The subjects are often highly symbolic, such as a soldier inside the letter G for "Guerra", an odalisque sleeping in the N for "Nudez", or a modern woman in the shadow of the I, machinery in her hand and a train and smokestack in the background, for "Industria". The only published work by Godinho, whose photograph is mounted to the title page. She came from a renowned line of Lisbon calligraphers; her grandfather, Manoel Nunes Godinho earned the title of "Calligrapho da Casa Real", or the royal calligrapher. -Vendor Description
