Summary:
"These 178 justly-celebrated Metamorphoses woodcuts by Virgil Solis (1514-1562) are small masterpieces of the Renaissance of the North. It is quite incredible that they were first published posthumously (Frankfurt, 1562; later in 1659 and 1571, as here). Solis, as did many of his contemporaries, frequently borrowed from other illustrators; in this case the woodcuts by Bernard Salomon in the Lyon 1557 "Metamorphose Figuree" served him well; in some instances they seem to be almost reversed copies. In the present series, 14 of the woodcuts bear the monogram "VS," and 9 are signed "H" (perhaps the mark of an engraver). Besides Durer, Solis was one of the truly great "Mannerist" artists and engravers in Nuremberg. His output was extremely varied, and included designs for furniture and jewellery. This edition is further distinguished by the characteristically erudite commentary of philologist Jakob Moltzer (Jacobus Micyllus)"--from vendor invoice.
