Summary:
|
In 1946 Paul Standard and Czech type designer Oldřich Menhart, started a correspondence based on their mutual work in the fields of calligraphy and type design. Menhart would send samples of his art and typographic work to Standard. There is a large archive of letters from Menhart in Paul Standard's papers.
Paul Standard promoted Menhart’s work in a 3-part article that was published from October through December 1953 in "American Printer" magazine. In 1959, Menhart named a typeface "Standard," in honor of his colleague. The metal type was released by the Czech type foundry, Grafotechna.

Summary:
|
The short silent home movie starts with several people gathered outside on a hill. It then cuts to Menhart at his desk, examining a medal. At 46 seconds, Menhart and a woman are talking, seated side-by-side. This is presumably his wife.
At 1:04 the film cuts to large lettering executed by Menhart: "Petr Bezruč, Povídky ze života," Bezruč was a Czech poet and the title translates as "Stories from Life." This lettering was presumably used for a book cover, ca. 1957. The film ends with Menhart at his desk, smoking and working on the lettering.
