This botanical notebook belonged to the American type designer, Frederic W. Goudy when he was 17 years old. At that time, his family spelled their last name "Gowdy," which he later changed to the original Scottish spelling. The workbook's plant identification pages are dated March through May 1883. Many pages are blank. Goudy signed the flyleaf in cursive writing and a shaded Tuscan style of lettering.
